Microsoft Entra External ID Integration

Entra External ID is a new CIAM (customer identity and access management) that is built on the same technology as Entra ID. Entra External ID enables you to provide authentication to ebs from users outside of your institution, such as applicants, using a separate service from your institution directory. Note that Entra External ID is an optional authentication method that will not be enabled by default or replace any existing authentication methods.

Entra External ID supports various forms of MFA (multi factor authentication) and can also support non-local identity providers, such as Google, Facebook, and Apple, so long as an email address is provided. This enables institutions to provide more choice on the authentication options available to ebs users.

Following the launch of Entra External ID, Azure AD B2C has been defined as Microsoft’s legacy solution for CIAM. For more information on the differences between Entra External ID and Azure AD B2C, go to Microsoft Entra External ID frequently asked questions.
